Urban October: great opportunity to promote climate challenges in our cities

There are 31 days in October that we are having the opportunity to become part of promoting a better world-wide urban future. Everyone interested in sustainable urbanization can participate in activities, events, and discussions coordinated by UN-Habitat.

UN-Habitat promotes sustainable changes in cities through knowledge, policy advice, technical assistance and collaborative action to leave no place behind. With "Urban October" they want to bring together national and local governments, universities, NGOs and communities to create competitive, inclusive, economically viable and sustainable green cities.

Since 55 per cent of the world’s population live in cities and towns, the United Nation’s Agenda for Sustainable Development has put sustainable urbanization at the centre of the global agendas for development "to make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable". By engaging all stakeholders, cities can harness transformational change and ensure a better life for all in an urbanizing world.

Which events are hosted in October?

There are several events taking place, such as "World Habitat Day" (5th October), hosted by the city of Surabaya in Indonesia, to reflect on the state of cities and on the basic right of all to adequate shelter. The Day is also intended to remind the world that we all have the responsibility to shape the future of our cities.

Other events are held round the globe on the theme "Housing For All: A Better Urban Future". The last event taking place "World Cities Day" on 31st October. The Day is expected to promote the international community’s interest in global urbanization, push forward cooperation among countries in meeting opportunities and addressing challenges of urbanization, and contributing to sustainable urban development around the world. The first event started in 2014 under the theme "Better City, Better Life". For this year it's "Valuing our communities and cities".
