ZAMG presented the CLARITY CSIS and its implementation for the Linz demonstration case at EGU

As a partner of My Climate Service ZAMG presented the CLARITY CSIS process and its implementation for the Linz demonstration case at the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly. The conference took place in Vienna, Austria, from 8–13 April 2018 and brought together geoscientists from all over the world to a meeting covering all disciplines of the Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences.

ZAMG is the Central Institution for Meteorology and Geodynamics (German: “Zentralanstalt für Meteorologie und Geodynamik”) and it is the national meteorological and geophysical service of Austria. ZAMG was founded in 1851 and is the oldest weather service in the world.

The EGU takes place once a year with around 15.000 participating scientists. It offers a great opportunity for researchers from all fields of geosciences – especially early career scientists – to exchange and discuss their scientific work, covering a wide range of topics, from Earth to Planetary up to Space sciences.

Presenting the CLARITY project in the Urban Climate session

The co-organized session “Urban climate, urban biometeorology, and science tools for cities” strongly focused on the different methods and strategies – from both an observational and modelling point of view – for using scientific data and products to support adaptation and mitigation of climate change effects in urban areas. In particular, the last part of this session was dedicated to the field of Climate Services and the implementation of climate tools for urban areas.

In this context, the CLARITY project was presented to a group of international urban climate researchers. The presentation entitled “CLARITY Climate Services - Supporting Urban Climate Change Resilience and Adaptive Planning through Modelling of Possible Climate Adaptation Strategies” outlined the CLARITY Climate Services Information System (CSIS) vision based on the EU-GL methodology.

During the PICO-Session Climate Services - Underpinning Science it was demonstrated how Climate Services can be used to support climate change adaptation and provide climate information according to user’s needs. Best practices and obtained knowledge were presented within the scope of several Climate Services initiatives including Copernicus as well as H2020 initiatives and part of this information is also relevant for CLARITY.

Furthermore, particular attention was paid to the implementation of the Austrian demonstration case that focuses on urban planning and climate adaptation in the city of Linz under the consideration of the main climate related concern in this area – heat waves and Urban Heat Island effects.

The CLARITY CSIS product is aimed to support urban planning and decision making by analyzing current and future urban heat load. Additionally, the effects of adaptation measures (e.g. greening, unsealing) on urban heat load and the effects of building characteristics on ventilation within urban areas will be assessed.

During the presentation at EGU a series of preliminary results carried out by the ZAMG with the urban climate model MUKLIMO_3, including climate projections at 100 m resolution, as well as general adaptation scenarios were shown for the area of Linz and discussed with the other participants.
